Am I old? – trends in the digital age

I am quite tech savvy. I know what’s out, what’s coming, how to get the best out of tech, and read up frequently what’s going on in the world. However, for whatever reason, there’s a huge gap in my knowledge.

Things like Snapchat, Tinder, and whatever else appears as a software trend seems to come and go without me even knowing. I only become aware if there’s a report in the news about it. It seems that I’m no longer part of the social circles where such things are discussed, and therefore, I’m completely unaware. I never thought it would be like this.

Take Snapchat for example. It appears to have been something the younger crowd used. School and college age, I assume. It appeared and was wildly popular before I even knew it existed. I took a look, couldn’t work out how to add friends, and deleted it. Something popular in the world of tech had passed me by. It wasn’t the first thing, and certainly won’t be the last.

So here I am. Where I once thought I’d be aware of what my children are doing, probably because I’d be on the ball and doing it too, I now realise that things will pass me by without even realising they exist. This isn’t what I expected.

Lesson – sometimes, you can’t help but be out of the loop.
